West Little Rock Rotary Club Literacy Project Update:
On Friday November 17th, 2006 members of the Rotary Club of West Little Rock attended Franklin Incentive School Literacy Assembly. David Barnett, Club Community Director, Brian Keltch, PR Chairman, and Club President Marc Sherman, Presentated The school over 150 children books along with a nice check to be used to purchase needed school resource materials. Participation in the event included reading a New book to the entire student body. Our five or five literacy project encouraged members to donate at least five book or five dollars to the literacy Project. All club members were also encouraged to sign up to Read a book to children at their local public schools through the Little Rock ViPS program. Volunteers in Public Schools had a Reading day on November 14th in which Rotarians from our club participated. We plan on continuing our Literacy Project throughout the year with another book drive in March, and plan to visit Chicot Elementary school with a like Presentation of Books, Donations, and Reading to Students.
Update Healthy Smiles Project
On Monday November 27th, 2007 members of the West Little Rock Rotary Club spent the day visiting local Elementary Schools to educated 2nd grade students about dental health. With the help of Mrs. Joanie Mashburn, a Dental Hygienist, the students where given a short program on how to take better care of their teeth. The Dental health education was conducted at four schools, Forest Park & Fulbright Elementary in the morning and Brady & Williams Elementary in the afternoon. During the program members of the West Little Rock Rotary Club read a short story about "Andrew loose Tooth" the 2nd graders especially enjoyed this part of the program. At the end of the program every student was given special dental gifts, which included a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a coloring book. West Little Rock Rotarians plan to visit other schools in February during national dental month. The Dental Health Project "Health Smiles." is a cooperative effort of Rotary Clubs in District 6150 with Arkansas Department of Health and Human Services, & Delta Dental of Arkansas. Rotarians serving the community in which we live with both dental education and literacy
